The gist

Amsterdam is compact, flat, and bike-first, with a canal belt that is a UNESCO site and a museum quarter (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh) that anchors any trip. It is one of Europe’s most rentable group cities — everything is 15 minutes by bike or tram.

Advisor notes

COMMON MISTAKE

Not booking the Anne Frank House the minute tickets release (six weeks out) — it sells out and there is no walk-up line.

SKIP THIS

Renting a bike on day one if your group is nervous in traffic — Amsterdam’s bike lanes are fast and unforgiving; walk or tram until you’ve watched the flow.

TIMING MATTERS

Tulip season (mid-April) is gorgeous but slammed; if flowers aren’t the point, May and September are milder and far calmer.
